Could this new system prevent COLLISIONS at SEA?
Check out WATCHIT Smart Prevention Collision System here:
watchit.ai/
Hi everyone!
Join me onboard as I install and test the brand new WATCHIT Smart Collision Prevention System! This is a system developed purely to prevent collisions at sea. It monitiors the surroundings around you, and will alert if you get close to shallow waters, grounds or navigation marks. We are only human and we can take bad desicions, or even no decisions at all, when we get tired and fatigued. WATCHIT is here to make you aware, when your not aware yourself.
Im really exited to bring this onboard to Greenland. When sailing in unknown water this system creates an extra barrier between me and a possible danger, and will make me aware if Im closing into a danger I might not know is there.
Lets put it to a real test!
Erik

Tessie got a new eye! Testing the Raymarine FLIR M300C lowlight and zoom camera.
Переглядів 43 тис.День тому
Check out the Tessie's new enhanced vision as Raymarine let me test their FLIR M300C low light and 30 x zoom camera. This is a big lift for my singlehanded navigation. The camera sits 4 meter up the mast on its Scanstrut support bracket, and is connected to my 3 x Axiom chartplotters. The camera is gyro stabilised, meaning keep the camera lens still while the boat is moving around in the waves....

Erik, do you have a clear view forward when the headsail is set to starboard? Cool gear; But it also costs €6,759.00 without the cable and switch. Plus another €480 for the Scanstrut Mast Mount.

NO. Because we are human. Someone will switch it off, spill liquid on it or blow a fuse and never look to see why its off. How many more things do we need to nanny a crew, GPS AIS many other boat monstering systems working through different variant of NEMA.

Nice that it networks with your existing Raymarine equipment via their network backbone. Plus it uses bathymetric data from your depth sounder, so basically it reads the chart data for obstacles and the sonar for depth. I remember that accident during the Volvo OceanRace. I guess they didn’t have their charts zoomed in close enough for it to show the reef that they hit. Human error for sure, but I wonder if your system uses all the data layers available on Vector charts, even if you’re not zoomed in closely on that chart…

Couldn't the system go one step further, and in the event of extreme danger and action by the crew, steer the boat away from the obstacle using autopilot and even egine controls? It could compute the less dangerous heading. Maybe sone law restrictions here, as this would be loke some IA being able to cibtrol de boat, but, probably for a v2.0 in the next years (if it is not done already...) I can envision IAs specially trained to control boats, even sailing yatchs, being able to accept natural voice commands, and answering in natural language, and even being able to optimize the sail trimming automatically, on those yatch with full push-button sail controls.

hitting large flotsam was always my biggest fear on longer passages (tiny probability I realise) - I wonder if this could be integrated with a forward scanning sonar to warn against that?

From the engineering perspective, this is a very nice system with lots of potential for sure. From the sailing perspective, it does give me some mixed feelings..as in, at what point do we become so dependent on technology that 'seamanship' becomes redundant because the electronics do it all for us? And what happens if, after becoming so dependent on it, the technology suddenly stops working for whatever reason? Then again I had seen ads for this system and it was very intetesting to actually see it in action, so thanks for that, Erik. :)

Its not aloud by regulations to connect the AP to safety systems yet. Its a fine line, but I think it would have avoided many mishaps. The danger I guess, is if the course change can resault in another accident🤷

    • @sunlovesailing
      @sunlovesailing День тому

@@erikaanderaa it’s funny, it’s illegal for boats but ok for cars. It would definitely be a fine line especially for larger ships with much longer delayed helm response times.
